Evelyn Taocheng Wang

In her classical drawings and paintings, as well as videos and performances, Evelyn Taocheng Wang (Chengdu, China, 1981, lives and works in Rotterdam) combines a straightforward and at times confrontational tone with emotional, poetic and often autobiographical undercurrents. Through her diverse practice, she addresses ostensible fixed notions of identity, ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds. In the past years, Wang’s main interest has been in ‘image presentation’, researching different (art) histories of the body from a personal perspective. Her work emerges from an interest in what constitutes identity and how one’s own body is culturally relative to—and intertwined with—autobiographical structures. Autobiographical experiences are mixed with fictional fabrications, appropriating texts from novels herewith weaving cultures together.

The autobiographical nature and her playful use of cultural differences and symbols are the foundation of her practice. Furthermore, an interest in elegance and decadence resonates in her work: the main characters in her drawings, performances and video works appear to be seeking answers, or even salvation, in the experience of beauty.

Wang studied at the Städelschule, Frankfurt and was resident artist at De Ateliers (2012-2014). She has won the Dolf Henkes Prize, Rotterdam (2019) as well as the Dorothea von Stetten Award and the Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prize. She has had solo shows at KW – institute for contemporary art, Berlin; Frans Hals Museum | Hallen Haarlem, Carlos|Ishikawa and Galerie Fons Welters and participated in the group shows Manifesta 11, Zurich; Vleeshal, Middelburg; Stedelijk Museum Schiedam; Jenny’s Los Angeles. Forthcoming is a solo exhibition at Frac Champagne-Ardenne, Reims in October 2019.
