Opening on January 10th, Galerie Fons Welters is proud to present a group show with new works by David Jablonowski, Job Koelewijn, Maria Roosen, Gé-Karel van der Sterren and Berend Strik.
The exhibition will run until February 7th.
David Jablonowski
Those who are familiar with David Jablonowski’s work from his recent presentation in Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, will be surprised by his new series of sculptures. Grabskulptur , characterized by its spontaneous character, is both monumental as tongue in cheek towards sculpture. But also in this series the relationship between painting and sculpture is clearly present.
David Jablonowski (Bochum, DL, 1982) currently has a studio at De Ateliers in Amsterdam and graduated from the Rietveld Academy in 2007.
Job Koelewijn
Job Koelewijn presents a.o. a series of multiples he made over a period of fifteen years, entitled Medicine Cabinet. The multiples are often playful and refer to important themes in his work such as his interest in the senses, but also literature is predominant. Medicine Cabinet forms a beautiful reflection of Koelewijn’s rich and variegated oeuvre.
Over the past twenty years Job Koelewijn (Spakenburg, 1962) built a broad and varied oeuvre and exhibited both in the Netherlands and abroad. At the moment he is working on a global project in honor of Spinoza.
Maria Roosen
Maria Roosen is showing six hanging cans made out of glass. The cans are characterized by Roosens’ typical fluid forms; as if they solidified their liquid contents. The title Isabelle, Charlotte, Marlene, Juliette, Georgina, Cecilia together with the voluptuous shapes calls for associations with the feminine. The amorphous cans hang from the wall like heavy grocery bags and height wise they might also refer to an earlier work by Maria Jean, Pierre et Claude.
Maria Roosen (Oisterwijk, 1957) was awarded the Wilhelmina ring for her special oeuvre. In 2009 she will present a solo show in the Singer Museum Laren and in Galerie Fons Welters.
Gé-Karel van der Sterren
Gé-Karel van der Sterren will show three new canvases that are characterized by its immense colourfulness and an impasto, almost sculptural style of painting. Large areas of colour, applied thinly in watery acrylic paint, alternate with details painted with greater precision in oil paint, which suggest the beginnings of a narrative
Gé-Karel van der Sterren (Stadskanaal, 1969) was recently awarded the Jeanne Oostingprijs for his special paintings. In 2009 he will present a solo exhibition in the Haags Gemeentemuseum.
Berend Strik
Besides two embroidered photographs Berend Strik presents Declared Unobscene. The glasswork with photo refers to Indian culture in which pornographic images are scratched as a means of censorship to be declared unobscene.
Berend Strik (Nijmegen, 1960) will present a solo exhibition in June this year in Galerie Fons Welters.
Together with the exhibition a catalogue is published in collaboration with Valiz.
The exhibition will run until February 7th.
