In much of his work, Folkert de Jong (b. 1972) creates a universe populated by humorously macabre life-size human figures. In the new installation he has created for the GEM, the images are modelled on the protagonists of the De Stijl art movement that developed around Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian. De Jong reflects on the revolutionary idealism of the group and raises questions about the relationship between artwork, artist and society.
